Žumberak – Samoborsko gorje Nature Park

Žumberak – Samoborsko gorje Nature Park is a protected area located in the Zagreb County region of Croatia. It covers an area of 227 km² and includes the Žumberak and Samoborsko gorje mountain ranges, which rise up to 1,178 meters above sea level. The park is known for its diverse landscape of forests, meadows, rivers, and karst terrain, as well as its rich flora and fauna.

Flora: The park’s vegetation is very diverse, with over 1,000 plant species recorded. The forests are mainly composed of beech, oak, and fir trees, with some areas also featuring black pine, spruce, and yew. The park is also home to several rare and endemic plant species, including the Žumberak bellflower (Campanula zoysii) and the Žumberak saxifrage (Saxifraga zumbercana).

Fauna: Žumberak – Samoborsko gorje Nature Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including several endangered species. The park’s forests are home to red deer, roe deer, wild boar, and several species of birds, such as the golden eagle, goshawk, and tawny owl. The park is also home to several species of reptiles and amphibians, including the fire salamander, common toad, and slow worm.

Hotels: There are several hotels and accommodations available in and around the park. The most popular is the Hotel Lavica, located in the nearby town of Samobor, which offers a range of amenities, including a spa, swimming pool, and restaurant. Other options include the Hotel Park, located in the village of Rakitje, and the Guesthouse Castle Stari Tabor, located in the park itself.
